History

James Duncan of New Hampshire is known to be the city’s founder because he recorded the first plot for the city in 1826. He visited the area and decided to purchase land here. At the request of his wife, he named the town after Jean Baptiste Massillon who was a famous french catholic bishop in the 1700s. (Wikipedia)

As the town grew, it had a large population of mill workers who loved football and eventually the city would become known as "The City of Champions” because more than twenty-four professional football players and ten professional basketball players grew up in Massillon.

By the 1900s the steel industry was big in the area but visionaries eventually saw the downfall of that industry and they organized the Massillon Development Foundation. They found investors to create industrial parks and recruited new industries. Today the economic base for the city includes companies that process food and companies that manufacture a variety of products. More about the history of Massillon can be found here.
