The county was founded in 1840 after the Portage Summit, the highest point along the Ohio and Erie Canal. Because of its location to this canal, the county grew quickly and became a major location for the production of rubber. Major companies like B.F. Goodrich, Firestone Tire and Rubber and Goodyear Tire & Rubber were all located in the county seat of Akron, making the city to become known as the “Rubber Capital of the World.”
