History

Tallmadge, Ohio, was founded in 1807 by David Bacon, who purchased the land from the Connecticut Land Company. The city is named after Benjamin Tallmadge, a Revolutionary War soldier who later served as a U.S. congressman. The original settlement of Tallmadge was built around a square, which is still the center of the city today.

During the 19th century, Tallmadge grew as a center of agriculture and manufacturing. The city's location on the Ohio and Erie Canal made it an important transportation hub, and many businesses sprang up to take advantage of this. Tallmadge was also home to several mills, including a gristmill and a sawmill, which helped to power the local economy.

In the early 20th century, Tallmadge began to evolve into a residential community. Many of the city's historic homes were built during this time, and the city's population grew as people moved to the area to take advantage of its low cost of living and peaceful, rural lifestyle.

During World War II, Tallmadge played an important role in the war effort. The city was home to a large Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant, which produced essential war materials such as tires and rubber products.

Today, Tallmadge continues to be a thriving community with a rich history. Many of the city's historic buildings and homes have been preserved, and the city's downtown area features a number of unique shops and restaurants. Despite its growth and modernization, Tallmadge has managed to maintain its small-town charm and sense of community. (Tallmadge-Ohio.org)
